WBC Silver lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (25-2-1, 18KOs) will face off against popular Venezuelan Jorge Linares (31-1, 20KOs) for the vacant WBC lightweight title on Saturday, October 15th. In the main event, Bernard Hopkins will face off against Chad Dawson. The fight card will be broadcast live on HBO PPV.

The semi-main event twelve rounder will mark the second time that DeMarco challenges for the full-fledged green and gold belt. In his first opportunity, DeMarco of Tijuana by way of Los Mochis, Mexico, came up short against the late Edwin Valero in Monterey, Mexico, in early 2010.

“That experience helped me a lot. That was a fight, like I have said before, that wouldn’t change for anything,” the soft but well-spoken DeMarco recently stated. “It is like if I went from elementary school to junior high school in that fight. That was as fight that I learned much from and this is how the sport is.”

Since that loss, DeMarco has gotten back on the winning track, stopping title challenger Daniel Attah in two and then earning a unanimous decision over Mexican Reyes Sanchez to capture the Silver belt once again. Despite the wins, DeMarco says that the losses are the real lessons, “You win and you lose and you must learn from your losses. My losses and the errors I have made in my life is what have made me who I am.”

If the Valero loss was if going from the sixth to the seventh grade, DeMarco does not feel a win over Linares and in turn capturing the title is like receiving a degree, “No, not at all. In this sport, you never graduate. You never stop learning. That is the difference. One needs to keep learning more and more. We know that if we win, bigger and better things will come and much tougher tests. We must be able to give even more of us.”

The 28-year-old has been patiently waiting for this opportunity and knows that Jones is a very formidable opponent. He wants the world to know they can expect to see the “Irish Outlaw” at his best come fight night.

“I didn’t start training for this fight 8 weeks ago or even 8 months ago. I knew I was going to get this fight the day I inked with Don King and I’ve been preparing for this fight since that day. Guillermo is a phenomenal fighter, an underrated fighter, probably the best champion in the division. He’s the most dangerous and least lucrative. On June 25th I have to fight an A+ fight or I’ll take my first loss,” the eloquent Coyne stated.

Coyne is a student of the game and takes his craft seriously. His training camp for this fight is no different, “I always do my homework and I’m putting in the time, getting my extra credit too. I know exactly what I have to do to win this fight and on June 25th I’m going to be world champion.”

The former Contender series alumni is excited that when he steps in the ring for the biggest fight of his career on June 25th, it will be in front of his hometown fans. The fight takes place at the Family Arena which is located just outside of St Louis, MO. The “Irish Outlaw” has a large contingent of fans that will be out in full force on fight night.

“Many fighters train their whole life for this opportunity and it never comes. I have been truly blessed. I will fight for the world title 4 miles from the house I grew up in. This is more than a great opportunity but opportunity means nothing if you can’t capitalize on it. I have the best fans in the business and I’m going to give them a performance to remember on June 25th,” Coyne said.

The championship fight takes place on the under card of fellow St. Louis native Devon Alexander’s homecoming bout versus Lucas Matthysse of Argentina which will be televised by HBO.

After earning a majority decision over Alejandro Lopez (20-2, 7KOs) following a two year hiatus from the sport last February, San Marcos, CA featherweight Aaron Garcia (10-1-2, 2KOs) is in high demand to test up and coming southern California prospects like Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez (13-0, 10KOs) in an eight rounder on Friday, April 29th, in Ontario, CA. The difference is, Garcia is not ready to be the stepping stone.

“If they think I am a test for him, they have another thing coming,” Garcia said after an intense session at the Alliance Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. “I am hungry, I am a reborn Aaron Garcia. I have a whole new team around me and I am going to show these people who Aaron Garcia really is come April 29th.”

After putting together one of the most decorated amateur careers in recent years where he beat the likes of Vicente Escobedo, Francisco “Panchito” Bojado, Rocky Juarez and Brandon Rios among others, Garcia was a top prospect who went pro under the Golden Boy Promotions banner in ’04. As a result, Garcia knows where Lopez stands in his career, “I have been there, done that, I know exactly where he is at and the pressure is on him to perform.”

Vince Parra, Garcia’s manager and trainer, knows that Garcia’s next assignment is not an easy one but with his fighter’s new found excitement for the sport, he will be more than ready to pull off the upset.

“Its a tough fight but I see a lot of skill in Aaron. Lopez is a tough fighter, undefeated, great amateur background but I see some things that we will capitalize on,” Parra said. “Expect to see ring generalship and a man technically take another man apart with skill.”

“You are going to see a world class featherweight. You are going to see a real exciting Aaron Garcia and a kid in Abraham Lopez way over his head, no disrespect to him, he is a tough kid. On April 29th he is going to be in there with to me, one of the top featherweights in the world, he has just been away for a while.”

The Garcia-Lopez eight round featherweight bout will be part of Thompson Boxing Promotions’ “New Blood” Series on Friday, April 29th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario, CA.

Under the watchful eye of his trainer Carlos Barragan, Orozco put together an intense work out that included mitt work, working on the heavy bag and shadow boxing. Orozco is in the gym in preparation for his next outing, a six round bout versus the always feared TBA on Thursday, April 21st, at Costa Mesa, CA’s Fight Club OC. The card is presented by Roy Englebrecht Promotions.

Originally slated to face Hensley Strachan (5-8-1, 1KO), Team Orozco which also includes manager Frank Espinoza is in search for an new opponent after Strachan had to bow out due to medical issues.

“I want to stay busy and after my last fight, I was ready to come back soon,” Orozco said of his first round KO of southpaw Manuel Aguilar last month which was broadcast on Telefutura from the same venue. “I came out clean out of that fight and didn’t really exert myself. I am glad Frank Espinoza was able to find this opportunity for me to fight again at the Fight Club OC.”

He took the first step towards that goal by scoring a 2nd round knockout on Saturday night over Bladimir Hernandez (18-5, 16 KO’s). Orozco, who has not stepped into the ring since his unanimous decision over Humberto Tapia in August of last year, will face off against lefty Manuel Aguilar (6-1, 4KOs) of Agua Prieta, MX, in a six round junior welterweight bout. After winning six straight, Aguilar will be looking to get back in the win column after losing his last fight to Joseph Elegele earlier this year.

“I would be more at ease if he wasn’t a left hander but we have been doing the work in the gym and I will be more than ready,” Orozco said about his next test. “The layoff and the fact that he is a left hander does add a little pressure but we have a plan and we will be ready to execute.”

One that has no doubt that Orozco will rise up to the challenge is 2007 Manager of the Year Frank Espinoza who guides the career of the 23-year-old father of two.

“I know this is a tough fight for Orozco but I am sure he is ready, he has been working very hard,” Espinoza, who also helps Abner Mares, Yohnny Perez, Carlos Molina among others with their careers, stated. “We intend to keep Antonio busy this year to make up for lost time. As many times possible, hopefully four to five times.”

The undefeated Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KOs) is winding down training for his March 19th fight against Bladimir Hernandez (18-4 16 KOs). The fight takes place on the undercard of Lucian Bute versus Brian Magee in Montreal, Canada.

Martirosyan received world class sparring at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California. Daniel Jacobs (22-1, 19KOs), who won via 1st round knockout on Saturday, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (23-0, 17KOs) and Roberto Garcia (28-3, 21KOs) are just a few of the upper echelon fighters that Vanes faced on a regular basis.

“There is always great sparring at Wild Card. I feel like every sparring session is like being in another fight because everyone is good and its real tough, hard sparring,” Martirosyan stated.

Martirosyan, who is trained by the legendary Freddie Roach, has recently added a new member to his team. Edmond Tarverdyan, who owns the Glendale Fight Club, has been in camp with Martirosyan and has given him a few pointers, “Edmond has worked with me on some new combinations. On March 19th you will see a new Vanes in the ring.”

Although Martirosyan is 28-0 he doesn’t feel that he has realized his full potential in the ring.

“Only Freddie, Edmond and my dad and uncle have seen what I can do. Freddie has been waiting for me to show it in the ring and on March 19th everyone will see what I can do,” he said.

After the Hernandez fight, Martirosyan returns to the ring on April 23rd when he faces Saul Roman (34-8, 29KOs) for the WBC silver belt which would put the winner in the #1 mandatory position to face WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (36-0-1, 26KOs), “I am taking it one fight at a time but I can’t wait to see ‘Canelo’ in the ring. A fight between ‘Canelo’ and me would be huge in LA at Staples Center.”

Not because the work intensifies or the diet gets scarcer but because the 24-year-old former interim WBC lightweight champion can’t wait to get in the ring.

“I am anxious to get in the ring, I have been training for quite some time and I feel I am ready right now,” DeMarco stated from the CREA Gym in his adoptive hometown of Tijuana, MX. “I am still sparring right now but that will tape off as we come closer to the fight date.”

The southpaw DeMarco, originally of Los Mochis, MX, will be facing Mexico City’s Reyes Sanchez (20-3-1, 11KOs) for the WBC Silver belt on Saturday, February 26th, at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. The championship bout is promoted by Gary Shaw Promotions and broadcast on Showtime.

Under the tutelage of Romulo Quirarte, DeMarco has been sparing his gym mates Orlando Lora, Omar Estrella and Juan Pablo “CheChe” Lopez at the CREA Gym in the heart of Tijuana.

“Lora and Lopez have given me great work, they are tall like Reyes Sanchez,” DeMarco stated. “Since I am tall for the division, I usually fight shorter opponents but I am ready for Sanchez.”

The winner of the bout is next in line to challenge current full fledged WBC lightweight champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto.

After his impressive win over Genaro Trazancos last week in San Francisco, undefeated up and coming lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (21-0-1, 11KOs) is more than ready to step up the level of competition. Having to face the overmatched Trazancos twice in less than twelve months because of a lack of willing opponents, the southpaw Gesta has a couple of fighters in his sights who he hopes to face off in a ring in the near future.

“I am ready for anybody. I would like to face Vicente Escobedo but I heard he might go down to 130 lbs.,” the twenty-three year old Gesta stated. “I would also like to face Luis Ramos. He is undefeated like me and I think our styles will match up for a great fight.”

The 17-0 Ramos of Santa Ana, CA, is scheduled to reappear on March 18th in the main event of Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo Tecate” at the Orange County Fairgrounds, a performance that San Diego, CA’s Gesta anticipates in watching intently, “I just came off a win and I hope Ramos wins too so that hopefully we can face each other in our next bout.”

Vince Parra, co-manager and trainer of Gesta, feels that the match up is the perfect one for either fighter.

“I think it’s a great fight between two southern California favorites,” Parra said. “The winner goes to bigger and better things while the loser goes back to the drawing board. We know that Ramos is a tough kid but I think Gesta has the speed and the skill to beat him.”
